Equality of Rights

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution designed to guarantee equal legal rights for all American citizens, regardless of sex. Introduced in 1923 and passed by Congress in 1972, the ERA to eliminate gender-based discrimination and is a pivotal part of the ongoing struggle for women's rights. Advocates believe that enshrining equality in the Constitution will strengthen protections against discrimination and promote equality in all aspects of life. The fight for the ERA continues, as supporters work to secure its ratification by the remaining states.
